Little Sammy Davis, born November 28, 1928 in Winona, Mississippi, died February 16, 2018 in Middletown, N.Y. Sammy was an amazing musical force and talent who inspired countless musicians, including right here in the Hudson Valley. To honor his memory, the Towne Crier is hosting a tribute concert featuring many of the blues musicians whose lives were deeply enriched by being around Sammy.

The House Band includes Fred Scribner and Pat O'Shea on guitar; Steve Guyger and Ryan Hartt on harmonica; Jack Geisenheimer, Doug Abramson and Craig Costa on bass; Brad Scribner and Papa John Mole on drums; Professor Louie on keyboards; and Erik Lawrence on sax. Joining them will be the Midnight Slim Blues Band, Slam Allen, Big Joe Fitz and many others.

Sammy left home at the tender age of 14 and hit the road, ending up in Florida and recording with Earl Hooker (Rockin Records 1953). Sam and Earl formed a band called the Roadmasters, named after the car that they co-owned. Alumni of the Roadmasters included Ike turner, Albert King and Pinetop Perkins, among many other blues notables. Sammy ended up in our Hudson Valley due to his work at the time picking apples.

Sammy was the real deal and a true gentleman.

In 1996 Sam was nominated for a Handy award, the highest honor in the blues world. Along with the Midnight Slim Band, Sammy was official house band for the Imus in the Morning TV and radio show for many years. In 2004 Sammy was introduced to Levon Helm and soon became part of the Levon Helm Blues Band and was featured on many CDs and DVDs.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward Sammy's funeral and tombstone.
